In Memoriam: The Department is saddened by the recent death of active duty civilian employee Mrs. Vernelle Smalls-Cardona, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. At the time of her passing, she was assigned as the Executive Secretary to the Family Justice Division.
Vernelle began her career with the Boston Police Department being appointed on September 11, 2000 as a Police Clerk assigned to the Information Systems Group. She was selected for a position in the Domestic Violence Unit as the Head Clerk in 2006 and was appointed the Executive Secretary in the Family Justice Division in 2013.
Vernelle was recognized in 2025 during the Boston Police Civilian Years of Service ceremony marking a milestone of 25 years of service. Vernelle was highly
motivated and relied upon by commanders, supervisors and those she worked alongside, all who held her in high esteem. She was kind and caring and a great friend and colleague to many.
