At approximately 11:58 PM on Sunday, August 16, 2026, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force, Boston Housing Authority, and Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, made an on-site arrest of Jamai Ellis and recovered a loaded firearm in the area of Glenway Street and Old Road in Dorchester.
While on patrol due to the increasingly large groups of individuals congregating at the conclusion of the Dominican Festival, officers’ attention was drawn to an unknown male suspect who, upon seeing officers, reversed his direction and began walking away from officers. Officers further observed the suspect to be wearing a crossbody bag, which he attempted to conceal from officers. Officers observed the suspect conduct several security checks of the bag by repeatedly manipulating the item inside of the bag.
Officers approached the suspect and frisked the bag and inside of it they discovered a firearm. The suspect was taken into custody.
The firearm was determined to be a Century Arms Canik TP9 9mm handgun loaded with seventeen rounds of live ammunition.
Officers arrested Jamai Ellis, 20-years-old, of Dorchester. Ellis is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Charges of Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, and Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card.
