About 11:50 a.m., officers assigned to District 3 (Mattapan) executed an arrest warrant for Joseph Matthias, 25, of Mattapan, which resulted in additional firearm-related charges in the area of Woolson Street.
Officers were in the area of Sutton Street when they observed Joseph Matthias exit a residence with several duffel bags and a backpack and proceed to Morton Street. Officers were aware that Joseph Matthias had an outstanding arrest warrant related to a shooting incident that occurred at 141 Tremont Street on July 9, 2026.
Officers attempted to make contact with Matthias, who immediately dropped both duffel bags and fled on foot toward Woolson Street. During the pursuit, officers observed Matthias remove the black backpack from his shoulders and throw it over a nearby fence. Officers safely apprehended Matthias in the area of Woolson Street before securing the discarded backpack.
Inside the backpack, officers recovered a metallic-colored firearm. District detectives arrived on the scene and secured the firearm. The firearm was determined to be a Beretta USA Corp. handgun. The firearm was loaded with a total of eight (8) rounds of ammunition. A subsequent inquiry determined that the firearm had been reported stolen in Somerset.
Joseph Matthias is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on the following charges:
- Carrying a Firearm Without a License
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License
- Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card
- Receiving Stolen Property
- Resisting Arrest
