BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Officer Danford D. Dunn who was killed in the line of duty 140 years ago today on July 6, 1886. Officer Dunn was kicked by his horse while participating in the City of Boston’s Anniversary Celebration of the Battle of Bunker Hill and succumbed to his injuries weeks later.
Officer Dunn was 36-years-old at the time of his passing and had served with the Boston Police Department for less than four years. He was survived by his wife.
Officer Dunn is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain. His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on Panel 2, East Line 32. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.
