The Boston Police Department Honors Black History by Celebrating Officer Edna Swan

In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Patrol Officer Edna J. Swan, a trailblazer in the history of the Boston Police Department.

In 1943, Officer Swan became the first African American woman to become a sworn member of the Department. She attended Fisk University during the Great Depression, volunteered with the Red Cross, and worked as a social worker before joining the BPD.

As a Boston Police Officer, Swan’s dedication to service and community paved the way for generations to follow. We proudly honor her legacy and contributions to the Boston Police Department and the City of Boston!
