Loaded Firearm Recovered After a Traffic Stop in Dorchester

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Nelson Baptista, 37, of Lynn, for multiple firearm related offenses.

About 12:55 AM, while police were patrolling the area of Harvard Street and Washington Street, they observed a motor vehicle with excessive window tint. Officers activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop at the intersection of Bowdoin Street and Oakley Street.

Officers made contact with the operator and requested his identification. While speaking with him, observations were made that the front passenger was not wearing his seatbelt, and was pinning his left arm to his body. While officers were speaking with the occupants, they observed the rear folding compartment to be down and exposing the truck.

After further investigation, officers issued an exit order to both occupants. As the driver was exiting the vehicle, he pinned his leg up against the door. The suspect then began reaching towards the door, and officers could see what appeared to be the end of a firearm magazine. The officers quickly removed the suspect from the vehicle and recovered a lighter that had the appearance of a Glock handgun.

Police continued to frisk the vehicle and recovered a firearm from inside. The firearm was determined to be a Bryco 38 with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine. While searching the suspect, officers also recovered a small vile of cocaine.

Baptista was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court for the following charges:

–          Carry a Firearm without a License

–          Carry a Loaded Firearm without a License

–          Possession of Ammunition without an FID card

–          Possession of Class B Drug
