Two Suspects Arrested After a Firearm Recovered Following a Traffic Stop

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Tyler Powell, 18, of Dorchester, for various firearm offenses.

About 12:00 AM, a motor vehicle was observed failing to stop for a red light at the intersection of Bowdoin Street and Washington Street. Officers positioned their cruiser behind the suspected vehicle and conducted a motor vehicle stop at 35 Harvard Street.

As the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger door opened and a suspect took off in a full sprint. Two officers engaged in a foot pursuit of the suspect, while the remaining two officers stayed with the vehicle. Officers observed the suspect slip and fall as he tried to jump between vehicles, and he was quickly handcuffed.

The officers that remained with the vehicle conducted an exit order of the remaining two occupants. A pat frisk was conducted and a firearm was recovered from the waistband of one of the suspects. District Detectives responded to the scene and determined the firearm to be a Smith & Wesson SD40VE with an obliterated serial number and nine rounds in the magazine.

While investigating the scene, officers determined that the operator of the motor vehicle had a suspended license. Santoneio Sumerlin, 28, of Dorchester, was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, and he is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester Court. The individual who originally ran from officers was promptly released from the scene.

Powell was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court for the following offenses:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID card
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Defacement of a Firearm Serial Number
