On Monday, August 11, 2025, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Kelly Smoak, 52, of South Boston, for firearm related charges.
About 12:04 AM, officers responded to a radio call for a person with a gun in the area 1 Jewish War Veterans Drive. Boston Police Operations provided officers with a description of a suspect sitting inside a parked vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers immediately observed a vehicle in the area that matched the description. Three individuals were standing outside of the vehicle, and one male matched the description of the involved suspect.
Officers exited their cruiser, and were able to stop the group. They were advised of the reason for the subject stop and a motor vehicle investigatory search was conducted. An AK-47 style rifle was recovered from inside the vehicle, and the suspect was placed into handcuffs.
Smoak was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court for the following charges:
– Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
– Carrying a Firearm without a License
– Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
– Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device
– Improper Storage of a Firearm
– Armed Career Criminal
