Operation “Safe Scooter” Conducted in Fenway Neighborhood

Earlier this week, officers assigned to District D-4 (South End/Back Bay/Fenway) conducted Operation Safe Scooter in the area of Boylston and Kilmarnock Streets as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance traffic safety and address the increasing concerns surrounding unregistered and improperly operated motorized scooters.

As a result of the targeted enforcement effort, officers seized a total of nine (9) unregistered scooters. One (1) individual was taken into custody following an incident involving reckless operation.

During the operation, 21-year-old Johan Garcia of Dorchester was arrested after allegedly attempting to flee from officers attempting to stop him for recklessly operating an unregistered moped in the area of 148 Brookline Avenue. He is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on the following charges:

  • Failure to Stop for Police
  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
  • Resisting Arrest

In addition to enforcement actions, officers conducted proactive community outreach by distributing educational flyers to scooter operators. The materials provided guidance on Massachusetts motorized scooter laws, including registration requirements and safe operating practices.

Operation Safe Scooter underscores the Boston Police Department’s ongoing commitment to combining enforcement with public education to promote safe and lawful use of roadways for all community members.
