At about 11:52 PM, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, officers assigned to District C-6 (South Boston) responded to the area of 259 Dorchester Street for a report of a Commercial Alarm. Upon arrival, officers observed the side door of the building to be shattered. Officers observed multiple cash registers had been tampered with and cigarette cartons were scattered on the floor.
Officers were provided with security footage of the incident, and the suspect was seen placing multiple cigarette cartons into a green bag. Officers were able to broadcast a description of the suspect, and began to canvass the area.
Early Monday morning, at about 3:11 AM, officers were on patrol in the area of Southampton Street and Massachusetts Avenue when they observed a group with a male matching the description from the prior breaking and entering.
Officers approached the group and mentioned a breaking and entering that occurred earlier in the night. The male matching the description immediately fled and ran towards Melnea Cass Boulevard. A foot pursuit ensued, and officers were able to apprehend the suspect.
Officers conducted a search of the suspect and recovered a green bag containing several cartons of cigarettes that were stolen from 259 Dorchester Street.
Officers placed Brendan Wetherbee, 31, of Boston, under arrest and charged him with Breaking and Entering Nighttime for Felony. He is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court.
