On Sunday, February 9, 2025, at approximately 1:15 AM, Officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested multiple individuals on firearm-related charges in the area of 279 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain. Officers responded after a ShotSpotter activation detected multiple rounds fired near 51 Prentiss Street.
While canvassing the area, Officers observed four individuals who fled upon seeing police. Two of the suspects were seen clutching their waistbands, indicating the possible possession of firearms. Officers pursued them into a nearby residential building, where a suspect discarded an assault rifle-style pistol. The chase continued until two suspects, identified as 20-year-old Yordany Torres Lara, of Jamaica Plain, and 18-year-old Shawnmathew Smith, of Roxbury, were apprehended. A second firearm, a 9mm “ghost gun,” was later recovered in the building.
A third suspect, a 17-year-old male, was found hiding under a parked vehicle and taken into custody. He was found to have multiple outstanding warrants, including charges related to firearm possession, assault, and witness intimidation.
All three were arrested and are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court for the following charges:
- Yordany Torres Lara faces multiple firearm-related charges, including possession of a machine gun and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
- Shawnmathew Smith is charged with firearm possession, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and trespassing.
A 17-year-old Male faces trespassing and providing a false name to police, along with charges from multiple outstanding warrants.
