B-3 Officers Arrest Suspect for Drug Trafficking Following a Traffic Stop

At about 7:32 PM, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Melvin Ward, 49, of Dorchester, on drug trafficking charges.

Officers were conducting an ongoing drug investigation in the area of Washington Street and Fenelon Street. Officers were aware of a suspect believed to be engaged in drug transactions. Officers observed the suspect operating a moped with no registration and conducted a traffic stop.

Officers requested the suspect’s driver’s license which he did not have on his person, but provided officers with his name and date of birth. Officers conducted an inquiry of this information and determined that the suspect’s license was suspended.

Officers conducted a pat frisk of the suspect and recovered twelve small plastic bags of marijuana, and $961 in US currency. After further investigation, officers determined that the moped was stolen, and placed the suspect into handcuffs.

Officers searched the suspect and recovered a large plastic bag containing what they believed was crack cocaine. The drugs were later determined to weigh approximately 27.6 grams.

Ward was placed under arrest and charged with Trafficking of Class B Crack Cocaine, Receiving Stolen Property, and Operating with a Suspended License. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
