B-3 Anti-Crime Unit Recovered a Firearm After a Traffic Stop in Dorchester

At about 10:46 PM, on Saturday, April 6, 2024, officers assigned to the Anti-Crime Unit of District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested a 33 year old male from Mattapan, on firearm related charges.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Blue Hill Avenue and Baird Street when they observed a motor vehicle fail to stop at a red light, and proceed to take a right turn from the center lane. Officers began to follow the motor vehicle onto Baird Street. At this time, the vehicle quickly stopped and parked in the middle of the road, preventing the free flow of traffic.

Officers activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens to initiate a motor vehicle stop. The operator immediately exited the vehicle and began to argue with officers. The officers advised the operator of the reason for the traffic stop, and requested his driver’s license. The operator refused the officers requests multiple times, and he was advised he would be placed under arrest for refusal to submit. The operator continued to refuse the officers orders for his information, and he was placed into handcuffs.

As officers were placing the suspect into handcuffs, another officer stood by the motor vehicle, and immediately observed a firearm inside a holster on the front passenger seat. Officers requested the other occupants out of the vehicle. Officers requested the other occupants to provide their information which they also refused. The vehicle was then towed from the scene for safe keeping. The other occupants were promptly released from the scene.

After further investigation, officers were able to determine that suspect had suspended driver’s license. The firearm was later determined to be a FN firearm with ten rounds in the magazine.

He was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, motor vehicle operator refusal to identify himself, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
