Traffic Stop Results in a Firearm Recovered in Dorchester

At about 3:35 AM, on February 17, 2024, officers assigned to the Anti-Crime Unit of District B-2 (Roxbury) made an onsite firearm arrest of Gary Whynter, 31, of Mattapan, following a traffic stop in Dorchester.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Bowdoin Street and Geneva Avenue, when they observed a motor vehicle fail to stop for a red light. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, and stopped the vehicle in the area of 13 Harvard Street.

Officers made contact with the occupants of the motor vehicle, and an officer observed the grip of a firearm on the driver’s person. Officers requested the driver to exit the vehicle, and the driver immediately attempted to reach for the vehicle’s gear shift in an attempt to flee. Officers were able to safely remove the driver from the vehicle, and recovered a firearm from his waistband. The firearm was later determined to be a Polymer 80 with 15 rounds in the magazine, and 9 rounds in a spare magazine. The other two occupants were promptly released from the scene.

Whynter was placed under arrest and charged with: Unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
