At about 3:41am, on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, officers from Area C-6 (South Boston) responded to a radio call for a male (wearing black jacket, gray pants and a black knit cap) checking car doors in the area of Columbia Rd and Douglas St. On arrival, officers observed an individual who fit the description of the suspect walking on Columbia Rd carrying what appeared to be a large painting. Officers approached and stopped the suspect.
When asked about the painting, the suspect stated, “It’s a gift for a friend.” When asked if he had been looking into cars, the suspect stated that he had been drinking and may have accidentally bumped into a few vehicles. When asked if he had anything on him that he shouldn’t, the suspect voluntarily produced a GPS device and stated, “I have a GPS … I mean … a cell phone.” When informed that the device was a GPS and not a cell phone, the suspect stated, “Yeah, it’s broken and I need to get it fixed.” However, when officers pressed the power button, the GPS worked and responded without issue. The suspect then stated, “A guy I know broke into a car and took the GPS.”
Officers arrested Justin Davidson, 24, of Boston and charged him with Receiving Stolen Property.
A search incident to the suspect’s lawful arrest enabled officers to see and seize two necklaces, a pair of earphones (still in the box) and a large amount of change.
