At approximately 1:10am, on Sunday, August 2, 2009, officers from Area C-11 (Dorchester) responded to a radio call for a person shot in the area of 33 Hancock Street (Ka-Carlos Bar). On arrival, officers located a male, inside the location suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced on the scene. The victim was identified as Manuel Monteiro, 47, of Boston.At about the same time, officers located a 2nd victim, a 20 year-old male, outside the location in the area of 8 Bird Street, suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. The 2nd victim was transported to the Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced. This victim was identified as Jovany Eason, 20, of Dorchester.
According to witnesses, an altercation began inside the premise. Witnesses further stated that as the altercation moved its way outside, witnesses say they could hear shots being fired. One of those shots struck Mr. Monteiro.
At approximately 2:15am, officers from Area C-11 (Dorchester) responded to the Boston Medical Center for a report of a 3rd victim self applying with a gunshot wound to the leg. On arrival, officers located and observed a 23 year-old male suffering from a non-life threatening injury.
As a result of the incident, an exhaustive investigation was launched by numerous units within the Boston Police Department; including, the homicide unit, C-11 detectives, C-11 patrol officers, members of the crime scene unit, members of the Special Investigations Unit, Crime Scene Reconstructive Unit members, officers from the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force and members of the Suffolk County District Attorneys office. Based on the evidence developed in the course of the investigation, investigators identified EMMANUEL DEPINA (26) of Boston was responsible for the murders of Mr. Monteiro and Mr. Eason. The facts of their investigation were presented to Dorchester District Court and an arrest warrant for Mr. DePina was issued on the charges of Murder (two counts) and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Once the arrest warrant was in hand, the above-mentioned officers worked around the clock in attempting to locate Mr. DePina. The suspect was made aware of the relentless efforts in locating him by family members and friends.
On Monday, August 10, 2009 Mr. DePina turned himself into Dorchester District Court where he was placed into custody on the outstanding arrest warrants. The defendant was transported to C-11 (Dorchester) for processing.
He is expected to be arraigned today at Dorchester District Court.
