19 Year-Old Arrested in Connection With Shooting Incident at 196 Blue Hill Ave.On July 17, 2009 at approximately 1:58 am two uniform police officers working a paid detail at Packy Connors Pub (203 Blue Hill Ave.) heard multiple gunshots coming from across the street at 196 Blue Hill Ave. The officer observed a black male with dreadlocks wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers shoot three black females and one black male. An off-duty Boston Police officer also made this observation at which time all three officers gave chase as the suspect began to run down Blue Hill Ave.
As the suspect continued to run from officers against their commands to stop, the fleeing suspect raised the firearm in the direction of the officers. At this time, officers discharged their department-issued firearms at the suspect in an attempt to stop him from shooting others. The suspect ran into Ingleside Street and then scaled a large fence ending up on Dewey Terrace. He then ran to Dewey Street where officers lost sight of him. With the assistance of multiple responding officers, the suspect was located in the rear of 16 Woodcliff Street hiding on a porch.
Officer then apprehended 19 year old Charkeem Hyatt of Dorchester and charged him with Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Firearm Discharged within 500 ft. of Dwelling, Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Resisting Arrest. His arraignment is expected for later today at Roxbury District Court.
The four individuals that were shot sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to local hospitals. The one male victim, 23 years old, was treated by EMS and transported to BMC. Two female victims, 25 and 20, both self-applied to BMC. A third female victim, 22 years old, was treated and transported to Brigham and Woman’s Hospital.
The facts and circumstances of this incident remain under investigation. The Boston Police Firearm Discharge Investigation Team is also investigating this incident, which is standard practice when an officer-involved shooting occurs.
Police Commissioner Edward Davis sought an emergency hearing with the Licensing Board regarding Packy Connors Pub, which is scheduled for Monday.
