At about 8:08am, on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, officers from Area D-14 (Brighton) responded to a radio call for a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian in the area of 533 Cambridge Street. On arrival, officers spoke to witnesses who stated that they observed a blue motor vehicle strike an individual and then continue driving. Witnesses say the suspect only stopped her car after a motorist driving behind her, pulled up next to her and told her to stop. The motorist says he kept blowing his horn until the suspect slowed enough for him to pull up next to her. The suspect stopped her car in the area of 581 Cambridge Street.Upon locating and observing the suspect’s car, officers noted damage to the front end of the car, as well as, a smashed windshield. According to witnesses, the victim was in the process of putting an infant child into a car seat in the rear of the car when he was struck. The victim, a 35 year-old male, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he’s being treated for life threatening injuries (severe head trauma).
The suspect in this case, Cathy Bergin-August, 47, of Watertown was arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Personal Injuries and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
