SHOT SPOTTER HELPS POLICE LOCATE AND ARREST SUSPECT IN POSSESSION OF AN ILLEGAL FIREARM At about 12:24am, on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, officers from Area C-11 (Dorchester) responded to a radio call (generated by Shot-Spotter) for shots fired in the area of 460 Quincy Street in Dorchester. On arrival, officers observed a group of four individuals standing around at the intersection of Quincy & Clarkson Streets. When officers asked the individuals if they had heard any gunshots, the individuals were evasive in their answering. Fearing one of the individuals was in possession of a firearm, officers began to frisk the suspects. As officers were frisking one of the suspects, officers felt a hard object. Officers quickly recognized the object to be a firearm. As officers were in the process of securing the firearm, the suspect pushed officers away and fled the area. After a short foot pursuit, officers were able to locate and apprehend the suspect as he was exiting a backyard in the area of Barry Street. When officers apprehended the suspect, the suspect stated, “You got me, I’m exhausted.” When asked to produce a license to carry, the suspect could not. Officers recovered a black firearm.
Officers arrested Paul Miranda, 18, of Dorchester and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
BIKE UNIT OFFICERS THWART UNARMED ROBBERY IN DORCHESTER
At about 6:13pm, on Monday, September 29, 2008, officers assigned to the Bicycle Unit were on patrol in the area of Dorchester Ave and Charles Street when officers observed two black males running in their direction, while being chased by another individual. Officers further observed that the male doing the chasing was pointing and yelling at the two black males. Seeing this, the officers instructed the black males to stop. However, instead of stopping, the black males kept on running. After a brief pursuit, officers were able to apprehend one of the suspects. When officers spoke to the victim, the victim stated that he was walking down the street, talking on his cell phone, when two suspects approached him from behind and stole his phone. When the victim saw the individual police had in custody, the victim stated, “That’s him.”
After the suspect was positively identified, officers arrested Jeffrey Hall, 18, of Dorchester and charged him with Unarmed Robbery. As officers were placing the suspect into the police cruiser, the suspect turned and spit at one of the arresting officers. As a result, the suspect was additionally charged with Assault & Battery on a Police Officer.
MAN WITHOUT A LICENSE ARRESTED DOWNTOWN
At about 3:50am, on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown) observed a gray motor vehicle traveling the wrong way down a one-way street. As a result, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the car. When officers asked the operator to produce a license, the operator produced a Mass identification card. When told he needed a license to operate, the suspect stated he was a good driver. A check, thru the Registry of Motor Vehicles, showed the individual not to have a license to operate in the Commonwealth. As a result, officers arrested Ed Dean, 43, of Roxbury and charged him with Operating without Being Licensed.
