K-9 UNIT ASSISTS IN THE ARREST OF A SUSPECT IN POSSESSION OF A DANGEROUS WEAPON AND DRUGS At about 4:02am, on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) observed a motor vehicle driving erratically in the area of Dudley and Mt. Pleasant Streets. As a result, officers activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the car. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected an odor of marijuana emanating from the motor vehicle. When asked to explain the odor, the operator stated, \”My boy smoked earlier.\” Based on the operator’s statement, as well as the odor of illegal drugs, officers asked the operator to exit the car. Once outside the motor vehicle, officers conducted a pat frisk of the suspect. Upon doing so, officers were able to locate and recover a knife with a blade in excess of 2½ inches. Officers arrested Dwayne Frederick, 32, of Roxbury and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Dangerous Weapon (knife).
During an inventory search of the motor vehicle, officers discovered a shell casing. Given the presence of the casing, officers called for a canine unit to assist in a more thorough search of the motor vehicle. In short time, the canine hit on a scent in the center console of the car. A search of that area enabled officers to recover an undisclosed amount of a Class D Drug (marijuana). Officers charged Mr. Frederick with Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug (Marijuana).
GUN-TOTING SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER FOOT PURSUIT
At about 11:11pm, on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force observed a large group of kids in the midst of a verbal confrontation in the area of Maple and Sonoma Streets. While officers were approaching the crowd, officers observed one individual in particular acting in a nervous and suspicious manner. Officers further noted that the suspect was grabbing at his waist area in such a way so as to suggest he was in the possession of a firearm. When officers approached the suspect, the suspect began to flee the scene. During the course of the foot pursuit, officers observed the suspect reach into his waist area and pull out a black firearm. Upon seeing the firearm, officers immediately began ordering the suspect to drop the firearm. While running behind the suspect, officers observed the suspect drop the firearm and then run into an unlit garage. As officers were approaching the garage, the suspect exited the garage and charged the officers with both fists flailing. After a brief struggle, officers were able to apprehend the suspect.
Officers arrested Aaron Powell, 18, of Dorchester and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm & Ammunition, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm in Public Way, Assault & Battery on a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.
HAD HE STAYED AWAY .. HE’D BE FREE TODAY
At about 9:41am, on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, officers from Area E-18 (Hyde Park) observed a stolen motor vehicle parked in the area of 144 Central Avenue. Since the car was stolen, officers decided to set up on or watch the car in the event the individuals responsible for stealing the car decided to re-enter the motor vehicle. Approximately 4 hours later, officers observed an individual approach the motor vehicle, look inside the car and walk away. A few minutes later, the same individual returned to the car and repeated the process. A few minutes later, the suspect returned to the car for a third and final time, entered the car and started the engine. At this point, officers descended on the motor vehicle and surrounded the suspect. Officers arrested Jeffrey Mejia, 19, of Hyde Park and charged him with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
