Suspects Arrested and Gun Recovered!At approximately 1:51am today, officers from District C-6 (South Boston and Dorchester) arrested three suspects: Joel Santana, 24, of Hyde Park charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon: Firearm, suspect, Haydee J. Garcia, 30, of Hyde Park charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Being Licensed, Failure to Stop for Police and cited for Open Container of Alcohol, and suspect Melvin Rodriguez, 28, of Mattapan charged with Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon: knife and Possession of a Knife with a Blade in excess of 2.5 inches.
This morning around 1:51am, officers on patrol responded to an assault and battery in the area of Boston St. and Massachusetts Avenue.
While at that location, officers were approached by an employee of the Venetian Garden who reported that the occupants of a gray van that had just driven down Mass. Ave. towards South Bay had threatened him by brandishing a knife and a firearm.
Officers activated light and sirens and pursued the fleeing car. Upon seeing the lights, the suspect motor vehicle accelerated in an attempt to evade officers. Officers followed the suspect motor vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop at 91 Baker Court where the suspect vehicle came to an abrupt stop.
Based on the facts and circumstances, officers ordered all three occupants out of the car and secured them. Offices conducted a protective sweep of the car and observed a firearm and a silver-folding knife.
Officers returned to the scene and spoke to the victim who told officers that the suspects in the car had been involved in a verbal altercation earlier with some other patrons and had been asked to leave. The victim further reported to officers that while he was escorting the suspects out, one of the suspects stated, “I am going to get a gun and shoot him!” The victim stated that a short time later while he was standing outside the restaurant, he observed the suspects drive by with suspect, Santana brandishing a gun and suspect, Rodriguez brandishing a knife while suspect, Garcia was operating the vehicle. The victim stated that the suspects then drove up the street made a U-turn, and headed back in his direction. Per victim, thinking that the suspects were coming to harm him, he flagged down an officer that was driving by and directed them to the suspects who now had fled down Mass. Avenue.
OUI Driver Spends Night in the “Can”
About 1:54am today, officers from District B-2 (Dorchester and Roxbury) responded to 5 Wyoming St. in Roxbury for a hit and run. En route, officers learned that a drunk driver had hit the caller’s car along with two other parked cars and fled the scene. The victim described the car as a four door silver Volkswagen heading the wrong way on Wyoming St. toward Humboldt Avenue.
Officers arrived in the vicinity of Humboldt Ave. when they observed a vehicle matching the one given by the caller approaching the light inbound toward Dudley Square. Officers also observed that this car had major front-end damage. Officers stopped the vehicle, and queried the plate learning that the operator had no license in Massachusetts. Officers approached the operator and requested his license and registration, and he told officers that it was in his glove compartment. Asked to get his license, the suspect gave officers a license from England and a Northern Ireland license. During the stop, officers detected an odor of alcohol emanating from the suspect’s breath, and observed that the suspect’s eyes were glassy, his speech slurred, and his lips busted.
Officers provided the suspect with his statutory rights, and asked him whether he had been drinking. The suspect answered that he had come from a bar in Brighton, and officers requested that he take some field sobriety tests. The suspect failed all sobriety tests given to him and was placed under arrest. The suspect, Darren Campbell, 27, of Milton was arrested and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Being Licensed, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Property Damage, Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, and cited for Operating a Motor Vehicle the Wrong Way on a One Way Street.
Officers returned to the scene of the accident, and spoke to the witness who reported hearing the accident, and looking to see the suspect’s car stuck to her car. The victim further stated that she went outside and observed the suspect back up from her car, strike two other cars and flee down Wyoming St. going the wrong way.
