On the heels of yesterday’s arrest for the 1988 murder of Janet Phinney, today the Boston Police Cold Case Squad in collaboration with the Boston Police Fugitive and Apprehension Team nabbed murder suspect Shabazz Augustine wanted in connection with the 2004 homicide of Julaine Jules.
The arrest of 32 year old Shabazz Augustine of Dorchester is the result of a relentless collaboration of multiple agencies including the Boston Police Homicide Unit, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Malden Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
On August 25, 2004, the family of Julaine Jules reported her missing to the Malden Police Department. Her family indicated that 26 year old Julaine, an employee at the Children’s Museum in Boston, had been missing since the day before. On August 27, 2004, Julaine’s family subsequently reported her missing to the Boston Police Department. At that time, a joint investigation among Malden, Boston and State Police was launched and aggressively underway.
On September 19, 2004, the dead body of a woman was recovered from the Charles River in Boston. The body was soon identified as being that of Julaine Jules. As a result of an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the manner of death was determined to be homicide. The cause of death was determined to be suffocation.
Recently as a result of information received and evidence developed during an on-going investigation by the Boston Police Homicide Unit, the Massachusetts State Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, detectives sought and obtained a warrant charging Augustine with the 2004 murder of Ms. Jules.
Augustine is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court tomorrow.
