At about 8:30am, on Monday, April 4, 2011, officers from Area C-11 (Dorchester) responded to a call to assist Boston Public Health Commission officers assigned to the Moon Island/Long Island check point security gate. On arrival, officers observed a pickup truck with an undisclosed amount of copper wiring lying inside the bed of the truck. According to the Boston Public Health Commission officers, there had been a recent theft of copper wiring from a building located on Long Island. When asked to explain how they came to posses the wiring, none of the occupants was able to provide a reasonable explanation.
Officers arrested Mike Zampitella, 43, of Quincy, Jarrod Hurley, 36, of Abington, Scott Otto, 44, of Boston and charged all three with Receiving Stolen Property.
During the booking process, officers overheard one suspect state, “Got picked up taking some copper from a building. I was just trying to put a couple of bucks in my pocket.\”
