At about 10:42pm, Sunday, March 13, 2011, officers from Area E-18 (Hyde Park) responded to a radio call to investigate a suspicious person milling about in the area of 40 Charme Ave. According to the caller, a bald white male, wearing a dark red jacket, was heard possibly breaking glass or knocking over trash cans. While en route to the call, officers learned that the suspect had a grabbed a shovel and was using it to break car windows. On arrival, officers located and observed two motor vehicles which had been damaged by the suspect. A search of the area enabled officers to locate the suspect. While speaking to the suspect, officers were able to identify and detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the suspect. Further, officers noted that the suspect had cuts and scratches to both hand. The suspect was transported back to the original scene for identification purposes. Upon seeing the suspect, the victim stated, “That’s him.”
Officers arrested Brian Bartels, 25, of Springfield and charged him with the Willful & Malicious Destruction of Property and Disturbing the Peace.
