About 8:40PM, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a breaking and entering in progress at 82 Berkeley Street.
On arrival, officers spoke to the victim who stated that she initially heard what sounded like banging at the front door of her apartment building and came out to see what was going on and observed the suspect described as a white male, about 45 years old, with a mustache wearing a brown jacket and gray hooded sweatshirt standing in the front hallway. Per the victim, the suspect fled the scene when she went back in her apartment to call 911.
Officers broadcast the description of the suspect and while canvassing the area spoke to a witness who reported that he observed the suspects kick in the front foyer door to 82 Berkeley Street then enter. Officers, while still interviewing the victim, were then informed that the suspect was back in the area and walking along Berkeley Street. Officers responded to the area that the suspect had been seen and stopped the suspect. As officers were speaking to the suspect, the victim came out and positively identified him as the one that had been seen standing in the foyer after kicking in the door.
The suspect, Lawrence Clegg, 42 of Boston was arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime.
