Runaway Driver Caught after Hit and Run Accident

This morning around 12:44AM, officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) arrested suspect, Patrick Fumarola, 21 of Dorchester and charged him with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Property Damage, Failure to Stop for Police Officers,  Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and Receiving Stolen Motor vehicle.

Officers initially responded to a call for a hit and run motor vehicle at the intersection of Neponset Ave. and Ashmont Street. On arrival, officers spoke to the victim who told them that his car was hit by a red Honda Accord while making a left turn onto Neponset from Freeport Street.  While officers were speaking to the victim, the same red Honda Accord was observed speeding away on Neponset Avenue.

Officers immediately got in their cars and attempted to stop the speeding Honda Accord by activating lights and sirens and broadcasting the direction of flight of the suspect motor vehicle. As officers proceeded behind the suspect motor vehicle, the suspect failed to stop for a red light and several other cars before coming to a stop. Officers immediately positioned their cars behind the suspect motor vehicle in order to secure the suspect when the suspect put his car in reverse and struck the officers marked cruiser in order to escape.  As officers attempted to get out of their marked cruiser, the suspect once again hit the cruiser causing officers to hit their chest on their steering wheel.

Officers were, finally after some time, able to order the suspect from the car by giving him numerous verbal commands. Once the suspect was handcuffed, he exclaimed to officers, “I found the car, I didn’t steal it!” The suspect was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Stop for Police and subsequently Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle once officers did a registration check of the suspect motor vehicle.

During the booking process, officers observed that the victim had a strong odor of alcohol about him, glassy eyes and was very unsteady on his feet.  The suspect was then charged with OUI-Alcohol.
