At about 11:15 am on Monday, November 22, 2010, an officer performing a paid detail on Area D-4 (South End) was approached by a female who stated that she had just seen an individual attempting to steal a bike in the area behind the Berkeley Street Gardens. According to the witness, a white male who looked to be in his forties was attempting to break a lock off a bicycle. The suspect was seen using a long metal pole to pry the lock off of the bike.
The officer performing the paid detail promptly broadcast a description of the suspect over the police radio. In short time, officers observed an individual who looked like the suspect. As a result, officers stopped the suspect in order to further investigate the matter. Officers were also able to locate the damaged bike which was still fastened to the pole.
While officers were talking to the suspect, the witness was brought to the scene. Once on scene, the witness stated, “That’s him.” Officers further noted that the suspect was in possession of a pair of pliers.
Officers arrested William Powers, 40, of Boston and charged him with for Possession of Burglarious Tools and Destruction of Personal Property.
