One Less Gun on Our Streets

Last night around 6:56, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) arrested suspect, Darell L. Couch, 21 of Dorchester and charged him with Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm.

The suspect came to be placed under arrest when officers from the Gang Unit were patrolling in the area of Everton Street and they noticed the suspect with two other individuals. As officers drove pass these individuals, they noticed the suspect crouch behind a nearby car and place his hand into his right pocket. Officers’ attentions drawn to the actions of the suspect turned their unmarked cruiser around to further investigate.  Having turned their cruiser around, the suspect now noticed the officers approaching and immediately stood up from his crouching position with is right hand  still firmly inside his right front pants’ pocket, turned and started running. Officers, being trained in the ATF Characteristics of an Armed Gunmen, and based on their experience in dealing with armed individuals believed that the suspect was armed with a firearm.

Officers got out of their cruiser and pursued the suspect who tried to run through a door at 52 Everton Street by ramming his shoulder into the door. The suspect having failed in his attempt to run through the door made his way to the right corner of the porch and was observed reaching into his pocket and pulling it out and moving his hand in a flicking motion. Right after doing this, the suspect exclaimed, “You got me!” Officers detained the suspect, and looked in the area right beneath the right corner of the porch where he had been observed flicking something out of his pocket, and there found a loaded handgun on the ground.

Officers demanded of the suspect a License to Carry and he responded that he had none. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the District station and charged with the above offenses.
