About 9:35PM, officers from District C-6 (South Boston) responded to the area of 4 Sterling Square for an armed robbery of a Chinese food delivery driver.
En route, officers were given a description of the suspect as a black male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans in possession of Chinese food, a bottle of soda and an undetermined amount of cash. In addition, officers were advised that the suspect had used a large kitchen knife to rob the victim. Officers were also told that the suspect had fled in the direction of O’Callaghan Way.
Officers proceeded to the area where the suspect was said to have fled and near Kemp Street observed an individual matching the suspect description near the Dorchester Avenue. Officers stopped the suspect near the intersection of Dorchester Ave. and Kemp St. and there immediately noticed that even though he was not wearing the described red sweatshirt, it was sticking out of a bag in his hand. Officers noticed that the suspect had a sweet odor much like that of Chinese food and also observed him to be in possession of a bottle of Coke, the same type reported to have been stolen from the delivery driver. The suspect reported that he was coming from a friend’s house when questioned but could not say where the friend lived. The suspect, once told that he was being detained for a victim identification, exclaimed, “There’s no need for that, I did it!” Several minutes later while still waiting for the victim to arrive, the suspect again stated to officers, “I already told you, I did it!” The victim upon arrival at the scene positively identified the suspect as the person who had robbed him at knifepoint.
The suspect, James J. Williams, 17 of Boston was arrested and charged with Armed Robbery. Officers subsequently recovered the bag with the Chinese food down the street from where the suspect was stopped.
Officers interviewed the victim who reported that he was delivering to 8 Sterling Square when he was confronted by the knife wielding suspect who took the food he was delivering, a bottle of Coke and an unknown amount of money.
