Vigilant Captain Bags Suspect While En Route to Congratulate Officer Receiving Shattuck Award
At about 3:50pm, on Monday, October 18, 2010, officers responded to a radio call for a bank alarm at 733 Centre Street (the Commonwealth Co-op Bank) in Jamaica Plain. On arrival, officers spoke to bank personnel who stated that a white male entered the bank, walked up to a teller and demanded money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect fled the bank on foot. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a brown-hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. A search of the area for the suspect proved unsuccessful.
In the interim, the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (the BRIC) issued video surveillance taken during the robbery. That photo, a photo of the suspect at the bank window, was posted on BPDNews.com
Today at about 12:21pm, Wednesday, October 20, 2010, Captain John Greland, the Commanding officer of Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain), was en route to Doyle’s Café in Jamaica Plain for a celebratory luncheon being held in honor of Officer Carlos Lara. Officers from Area E-13 were taking Officer Carlos Lara to lunch to celebrate his recent nomination for the Henry L. Shattuck Award, an annual award given to city employees for outstanding contributions to the field of public service. The awards have been presented annually since 1985 by the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, a private government oversight group.
As the Captain and Sergeant Krause were en route to Doyle’s, the Captain observed an individual who matched the description of the suspect wanted in connection with the bank robbery two days earlier at the Commonwealth Co-op Bank on Centre Street. As a result, the Captain, who was walking from Area E-13, approached the suspect and, upon seeing the suspect from a closer distance, was able to confirm his identity. While talking to the suspect, the Captain further noticed that the suspect was wearing the same brown-hooded jacket worn the day he robbed the bank.
The Captain and Sergeant Eric Krause arrested Daniel Webster, 40, Boston and charged him with Bank Robbery.
