At about 10:52am, on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, officers from Area D-14 (Brighton) responded to a radio call for a larceny at 60 Everett Street (Stop-n-Shop). On arrival, officers spoke with a store manager who stated that he had an issue with an employee. According to the manager, he received a call from a customer who stated that he had purchased a Stop-n-Shop gift card in the amount of $100.00, but when he attempted to use it, the card showed a zero balance. According to the store manager, an internal investigation showed, at the point of purchase, a cashier was seen intentionally giving the victim a card with no balance on it. Further, the suspect was seen pocketing the card with $100 balance.
Officers arrested Carmen Santiago, 45, of Boston and charged her with Larceny by Scheme.
The victim was reimbursed by the store.
