Mayor Menino Supports Drug Enforcement Agency’s first-ever Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-back Day

WHAT:The City of Boston will participate in the first nationwide Prescription Drug Take-back Day.  The event, held by the Drug Enforcement Agency in partnership with Boston Public Health Commission and the Boston Police Department, offers community members an anonymous, safe and environmentally-friendly solution to properly dispose of unused/expired prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.

WHERE & WHEN:    Saturday, September 25th 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at three locations:

1.      EAST BOSTON

BPD District A-7

69 Paris Street

East Boston, MA 02128

2.      WEST ROXBURY

BPD District E-5

1708 Centre Street

West Roxbury, MA 02132

3.      JAMAICA PLAIN

Brookside Community Health Center

3297 Washington Street

Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

WHY:                          Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-back Day is a collaborative effort to ensure the proper disposal of expired or unused medication that has the potential to be abused or harmful to the environment. Many people are not aware that expired and unused medicines are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.  Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are increasing at alarming rates and studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends.  This program is to assist individuals in restricting access to harmful prescription narcotics and also provides an opportunity to safely dispose of these hazardous materials by keeping them out of the water supply. Too often individuals dispose of such medication by flushing and therefore potentially exposing them to the water supply.
