At about 7:00pm, on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, officers from Area C-11 (Dorchester) were on patrol in the area of Dorchester High School watching or monitoring a Pop Warner practice when officers heard a radio call for shots fired nearby in the area of Wentworth Street. Upon hearing the radio call, officers promptly made their way towards the area of the incident. While responding to the call, officers observed a young black male running away from the scene in the direction of the high school. When the suspect refused to stop, officers began pursuing the suspect on foot. While pursuing the suspect on foot, officers followed the suspect as the suspect cut across the school football field (Roberts Field) and, in doing so, interrupted the Pop Warner practice.
While running behind the suspect, officer noted that the suspect appeared to have something in his hand. Officers pursued the suspect as the suspect ran the length of the field towards Washington Street. Officers observed the suspect jump or scale a chain link fence landing the suspect in the backyard of home in the area of to 29 Armandine Street.
In short time, officers were able to catch up to and apprehend the suspect. Officers retraced the steps taken by the suspect during the foot chase. While retracing the steps of the foot chase, officers were approached by a witness who stated that he observed the suspect hide something in a pile of leaves. A search of the pile enabled officers to locate and take possession of a firearm. When asked by officers if he had a license to carry a firearm, the suspect stated, “No.”
Officers arrested Michael Brown, 17, of Boston and charged him with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, and Disturbing the Peace.
