Around 6:58PM last night, Friday, August 10, 2010, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a person shot.

On arrival, officers observed Boston Health and Hospitals (EMS) and a Northeastern police officer on scene attending to the victim, a 22-year old male who had sustained injuries to his face from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was rushed to Boston Medical center with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers, in the course of their investigation, learned that Northeastern PD and Harbor Point Security were detaining suspect at the intersection of Sussex and Warwick Streets. Officers responded there and learned that the detained suspect had been apprehended after officers observed him running with a group of six to nine males possible exchanging gunfire due to the fact that officers there heard the sound of gunshots and observed flash of gunfire.  Officers pursued the group successfully catching the suspect while he was attempting to hide in the in the stairway of 5 Sussex Street. Officers then entered the yard of 7 Sussex Street where they found a semi-automatic gun.

The detained suspect was later identified by a witness as holding a gun at chest level while running across the street and as such, suspect, Manuel E. Martinez, 23, of Jamaica Plain was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm within 500’ of a Dwelling, and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon.

Officers, at the scene, learned from witnesses that the suspect who shot the victim walked into the barber shop, walked towards the rear of the shop, shot at the victim and fled out of the barber shop.

This incident is currently under investigation by District D-4 (South End) detectives in an effort to determine the facts and circumstances.
