At about 12:14pm, on Thursday, August 27, 2010, officers from Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain) responded to a radio call to investigate a suspicious looking person in the area of 8 Brookside Avenue. While en route to the call, officers learned via the police dispatcher that a witness had observed the suspect (described as a hispanic male, 16-18 years-old, 5’9” tall, wearing a gray shirt and black jeans) breaking into a car. According to the witness, the suspect broke into the car and removed what appeared a backpack, gray/blue in color, possibly containing a laptop computer. Upon seeing the theft, the witness gave chase. Before losing sight of the suspect, the witness says he last saw the suspect running in the area of Amory & Boylston Streets.
In short time, responding officers, canvassing the area, observed an individual who looked like suspect. Officers observed the suspect, while carrying the backpack described above, climbing a fence in the area of 240 Amory Street.
However, upon seeing the officers approaching, the suspect jumped off the fence, dropped the backpack, and began running towards 280 Amory Street. Officers were able to retrieve the bag and confirm that it contained a laptop. However, while pursuing the suspect on foot, officers lost sight of the suspect as he ran into a backyard. While attempting to relocate the suspect, officers observed a community member standing in front of her residence. When asked if she had seen the suspect, the community member stated that she hadn’t seen anyone but she couldn’t talk long because she had two young children inside her home. However, when the community member entered her residence, she quickly ran back outside, with her two children in tow, screaming, “He’s in my house! Upstairs!”
Officers promptly entered the residence and observed the suspect climbing out of a window in his efforts to gain access to the roof. When instructed to get off the roof, the suspect eventually complied. Once off the roof, officers arrested Jose Irizarry, 24, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Motor Vehicle, Larceny Over $250.00, Burglary and Resisting Arrest.
