This morning around 2:53AM, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) arrested suspect, Philip R. Woods, 17 of Dorchester and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Receiving Stolen Property.
Officers were on patrol of Harvard and Norwell Streets when they observed a minivan being operated at an excessive high rate of speed. Officers followed the car and observed commit several violations of the auto laws. In the area of 20 Old Road, officers were finally able to effect a traffic stop and approached the minivan which was occupied by seven individuals. Officers during the course of the traffic stop noted that they have had interactions with several of the occupants of the car for various reasons. Officers also noted a distinct smell of marijuana in the car which one of the passengers admitted to having on his person. As officers continued to make inquiry of the operator during the traffic stop, officers noticed nervous behavior on the part of the occupants in addition to some furtive movements. Specifically, suspect Woods was observed fidgeting with his waistband and shirt just prior to being asked to exit the car.
Once removed from the car, officers found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the area where the suspect had been sitting. The operator of the car was cited for several motor vehicle violations and a citation for Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Suspect Woods, while at the booking desk, was discovered to have a .40 caliber round secreted in his mouth. Additionally the gun that the suspect charged with turned to have been reported stolen from New Hampshire.
