COMMUNITY ALERT: SAFE MEDICATION DISPOSAL

Community Program Offers Anonymous Disposal of All Unused or Expired Prescriptions and Over-the-Counter Medication

PARTNERS:               Boston Police Department District C-6 (South Boston), CVS Pharmacy, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Allston/Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force and the South Boston Hope and Recovery Coalition

WHAT:                       The Boston Police Department is partnering with several agencies to offer community members an anonymous, safe and environmentally- friendly solution to properly dispose of unused/expired prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.

WHEN:                       June 12, 2010 from 9:00am – 12:00pm

WHERE:                     Proctor and Gamble (Formerly Gillette) – One Gillette Park, Boston MA 02127

WHY:                          This initiative is a collaborative effort to ensure the proper disposal of expired or unused medication that has the potential to be abused or harmful to the environment. This program is to assist individuals in restricting teen access to harmful prescription narcotics. It also provides an opportunity to safely dispose of these hazardous materials by keeping them out of the water supply. Too often individuals dispose of such medication by flushing and therefore potentially exposing them to the water supply.  We are going green!

INSTRUCTIONS:      Community members interested in participating are asked to do the following:  – Black out personal information on pill bottles, but leave the name of the mediation. If not in bottles, place in sealable plastic bags. Put all Sharps in Sharps Containers or Sturdy Bottles.
