UASI REGIONAL TRAINING

BOSTON POLICE CONDUCT K9 SHIPBOARD OPERATIONS TRAINING FOR NEW ENGLAND AREA K9 HANDLERS

WHAT:           As part of UASI Regional Training, the Boston Police Department’s K9 Academy will be hosting K9 Basic Shipboard Operations Training for Patrol, Narcotics and Explosives Detection K9 Units.  This course is designed to train and assist K9 Handlers in safely conducting searches of recreational boats, large vessels, and ferries.

Any regional K9 Unit could be called upon by a municipal, state, or federal agency to conduct waterborne searches This applies equally to EOD, Narcotics, and Patrol K9s alike.

Searching vessels with a police K9 presents lots of danger to both the handler and dog.  Depending on the design and location of the ship, just getting aboard could present a K9 Team with a significant challenge.  In order to address the hazards associated with this highly technical K9 mission, the course agenda includes initiatives such as: K9 Handler and K9 Personal Protective Equipment Familiarization, K9 Transportation and Hoisting a K9 Onboard a Ship and Indicators of Shipboard Suspicious Activity Awareness Training.
