Armed Home Invaders Captured by B-3 OfficersOn Saturday, April 12, 2009, at approximately 8:24pm, an officer assigned to Area B-3 (Mattapan), positioned his cruiser on Blue Hill Avenue in a manner, which afforded him a view of passing vehicles. Prior to doing so, B-3 officers were informed of an Armed Home Invasion that recently took place in Quincy. The broadcast gave a description of a Red Ford Explorer being operated by a black male & black female suspects.
The observant officer then spotted the suspect vehicle pass by him in traffic. The officer followed the vehicle and requested additional units to assist. Officers followed the Explorer as it traveled on Fessenden Street. The vehicle abruptly pulled to the side of the street and stopped. The female operator was ordered from the vehicle. Once she stepped out, she became aggressive towards officers and refused to obey their commands. Fearing the suspect was armed, Officers took hold of the suspect before she could re-enter the vehicle. A violent struggle ensued and officers were punched and kicked as a result. The female suspect was eventually placed into custody with the assistance of back-up officers.
The Quincy Police Department was notified of the stop and several QPD officers responded. Both parties were identified as the suspects in the Armed Home Invasion within their jurisdiction. Both individuals were placed into custody on the Quincy charges.
Both parties were transported back to B-3 (Mattapan) for a courtesy booking. During the process, the female subject was found to be in possession of Eight (8) plastic bags of crack cocaine and Two (2) plastic bags of marijuana. A folding knife (in excess of 2 ½ inches) was also located.
Officers arrested Channelle Leathers, 23, of Florida on the charges of Assault & Battery on a Police Officer (2 counts), Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Class B Substance (crack cocaine) With Intent to Distribute Within a School Zone (The Mildred School) and Possession of a Class D Substance (Marijuana) With Intent to Distribute Within a School Zone (The Mildred School). Ms. Leathers will also be facing charges out of Quincy for Accessory to Armed Home Invasion. Also arrested, Lorenzo King, 45, homeless on the charges of Armed Assault in a Dwelling and Felony Assault & Battery out of Quincy.
Upon the completion of the booking process, both parties were released to the Quincy Police Department.
Dog Fighting Ring Discovered By Building Worker
On Saturday, April 11, 2009, at approximately 11:30am, an officer assigned to Area C-11 (Dorchester), was conducting a “Walk & Talk” in the area of Crescent Avenue when he was approached by an individual wishing to supply information regarding a “dog fighting pit” in the basement of a house he was working in. He went on to inform the officer that he was doing plumbing work in the basement of 29 Raven Street and he observed several dogs, one of which was dead. He also claimed to have seen blood on the walls and floor of the basement.
The officer then accompanied the worker back to the residence and located a plywood-constructed dog fighting pit, several dog cages and blood on the walls and floor of the pit area. The officer also discovered three dogs within the cages. One of the animals was dead, one was seriously injured and the third was in poor health.
The Animal Rescue League of Boston was notified and a representative responded to the scene. A joint investigation was launched between the BPD and the Animal Rescue League of Boston. As a result of their initial observations, an affidavit for a search warrant was drafted. The warrant was issued for the basement of 29 Raven Street, Dorchester and executed at approximately 7:30pm.
Dog-fighting apparatus and devices were located during the search. The “20×10” pit was dismantled after being photographed. Various pieces of evidence were collected. The animals were removed from the property by the animal control officer and are in the care of the Humane Society.
Detectives were able to identify the individual responsible and are moving forward with the investigation by seeking felony complaints against him.
