Pedestrian Struck In Crosswalk by Intoxicated DriverOn Thursday, March 12, 2009, at approximately 6:05pm, Officers assigned to Area A-1 (Downtown), responded to 125 Tremont Street for a call of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.
Officers arrived on-scene and located a United States Park Ranger rendering care to the victim. Officers learned that the Park Ranger witnessed the accident and immediately took action. The Ranger informed BPD that he witnessed a female attempting to cross the street, by utilizing the crosswalk, and was struck by a motor vehicle that passed through a red light. Boston EMS arrived on-scene and transported the female victim to New England Medical Center to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The operator of the offending motor vehicle was still sitting in his car upon the arrival of the BPD. He initially refused to step from his vehicle but ultimately did so after several commands. As he exited his vehicle, an empty bottle of alcohol fell from his jacket pocket to the ground. An immediate odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath and he had great difficulty standing, for he continued to sway side to side. His eyes appeared to be glassy and he spoke with slurred speech. Officers requested the suspect to conduct field sobriety to which he refused several times.
Officers spoke with numerous witnesses to the accident and they all gave a similar account of events leading to the victim being struck.
Officers arrested Harjeet Singh, 50 of Revere, Massachusetts on the charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol. Mr. Singh will also be cited for the Crosswalk and Red light violation. During the booking process, Mr. Singh refused to take the Breathalyzer test.
No Permit…No Sausage
On Friday, March 13, 2009, Officers assigned to Area A-1 (Downtown), were patrolling the North End section of the City when they observed an individual selling sausages from a cart on Causeway Street in the North Station area. It should be noted that the officers recognized this individual for in recent time it was learned that he was not properly licensed and was warned to stop until he obtained the proper license and permits.
Officers approached the subject and learned he still had not obtained the proper permits to operate his sausage stand.
Officers arrested Michael Scoppa, 36, of Chelsea, Massachusetts on the charges of the Sale / Storage of Merchandize Without a Permit and Peddling Without a License.
