DAILY INCIDENTS FOR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2009

Gun Found During Car StopOn Monday, February 17, 2009, at approximately 10:17am, officers assigned to Area E-18 (Hyde Park), were traveling in the area of Cummins Highway when they conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle without proper brake lights.
Officers exited their cruiser and approached the suspect vehicle on foot. Once at the driver’s side window, they immediately detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from within the vehicle. Officers observed three occupants within the vehicle and asked the operator if they had been smoking marijuana. The operator replied, “Yeah, we just smoked a little while ago”. The operator went on to state, “I don’t have anything one me but I can only speak for myself”. The front seat passenger then stated, “I got a big bag of weed in my front pocket”. Officers requested the front seat passenger to exit the vehicle. Officers then conducted a pat-frisk of the suspect and located a folding knife and a large bag of marijuana. Officers’ shook the right pants leg of the suspect, which caused a .380 firearm to fall to the ground.
Officers arrested Gerald Corzo, 18, of Boston on the charges of illegal possession of a firearm and issued him a City Ordinance Violation for possessing less than one ounce of Marijuana.
Officers later discovered the firearm was stolen out of North Carolina.
Father & Son Arrested After Tearing Up Downtown Hotel
On Monday, February 16, 2009, at approximately 2:17am, officers assigned to Area A-1 (Downtown), responded to the Omni Parker Hotel for a report of a man destroying property.
Officers arrived on-scene and were informed by hotel security that two men were tipping over linen racks and pulling shelves off the walls. Officers were then led to one of the guest rooms where the two suspects were located. Officers confronted the suspects and were assaulted while attempting to place them into custody.
Officers arrested Michael Velten, 47, of New York and Michael Velten Jr, 23, of New York on the charges of Destruction of Property, Assault & Battery on a Police Officer & Resisting Arrest.
