At about 2:32pm, on Friday, January 9, 2009, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a motor vehicle accident involving a Boston Fire Department vehicle. On arrival, officers located and observed a Boston Fire Department vehicle (Ladder 26) that had run into or collided with a building at 835 Huntington Avenue. Officers observed extensive damage to both the truck and building. In addition to the above, officers also located two parked motor vehicles that appeared to have been struck by the fire truck.As a result of the incident, four Boston Fire Department firefighters sustained injuries in the accident. One of the firefighters was pronounced on the scene. Three others were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
In addition to the firefighers, eight civilians (four adults and four children) were transported to area hospitals where they were treated for minor injuries.
At this time the Boston Police Department would like to extend its thoughts and prayers to all those effected by Friday’s incident. To the family of fallen firefighter Lt. Kevin Kelley, the men and women of the Boston Police Department extend and offer their deepest and most heart-felt condolences. Said Commissioner Edward Davis, “We in the public safety community have lost a dear and valued member of our family. Lt. Kelley will always be remembered as a man who cared about his community, as well as, the men and women he served. On behalf of the department, I offer our sincerest sympathy and support to Lt. Kelley’s family, friends and fellow firefighters during this very difficult time.”
In conjunction with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Boston Police Department will be conducting a thorough and extensive investigation designed to better understand the facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
