WHEN BOOK SMARTS AND STREET SMARTS ALMOST BECOME ONEAt about 2:00pm, on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown), along with public safety officers from Suffolk University, responded to a radio call for a disturbance at 148 Cambridge Street (the Suffolk University bookstore). On arrival, officers spoke to store employees who stated that they observed an individual enter the store and grab three new textbooks off a bookshelf. After grabbing the new textbooks, store employees say the individual then attempted to re-sell the books back to the store thru the store’s book buy back program. When store employees confronted the suspect, the suspect became increasingly defensive and fled the store with the new books in possession. In short time, officers were able to locate the suspect and bring him back to the store. When asked to produce the stolen books, the suspect stated that he could not because they belonged to his friend. Store employees positively identified the suspect as the individual who exited the store with the new books. Moreover, store employees say this is not the first time the suspect has attempted to re-sell stolen books back to the bookstore.
Officers arrested Justin Quiles, 25, of Holbrook and charged him with Larceny Over $250.00.
POLICE DETAIL AIDS IN THE ARREST OF A SUSPECT WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH A CAR BREAK
At about 11:30am, on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, officers from Area D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle in progress at the intersection of Clarendon and Appleton Streets. While en route to the call, the police dispatcher informed officers that the suspect in this case was a hispanic male wearing a gray jacket with a stripe on it. Moreover, officers learned that the suspect was seen removing a red jacket from the car. In short time, an officer working a paid detail in the area of 303 Columbus Avenue observed an individual matching the description of the suspect. The detail officer stopped the suspect and detained him until additional units arrived. Officers noted that the suspect was holding a black duffle back. Sticking out of the duffle bag, officers were able to see a red jacket. When asked how he came to possess the jacket, the suspect stated, “I got it out of a car.”
Officers arrested Juan Rivera, 41, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Motor Vehicle.
