Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced the arrests of three men in connection with the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Curtis Ashford in South Boston earlier this year.Arrest warrants charging EDWARD HOLLOMAN (D.O.B.12/12/1988) of Lynn, MA and EDWARD MENDEZ (D.O.B. 05/25/1974) of Jamaica Plain with murder were lodged late last week at the Suffolk County Jail, where both men are being held on assault charges stemming from the incident that took Ashford’s life. A third man, DARREN HEMINGWAY (D.O.B. 02/24/1989) of Brighton, is charged as an accessory after the fact to Ashford’s murder.
Evidence developed in the course of an ongoing investigation on the streets of Boston and behind the closed doors of the Suffolk County Grand Jury indicates that Holloman and Mendez were engaged in an altercation with Ashford on East 8th Street at about 11:00 p.m. In the course of that altercation, Mendez allegedly provided the murder weapon to Holloman and instructed him to stab Ashford.
Holloman allegedly stabbed Ashford multiple times in the chest and abdomen and then, with Mendez and Hemingway, assaulted another man. Hemingway allegedly transported Holloman and Mendez from the scene and harbored them in the aftermath of the incident.
Conley praised the collaboration between Boston Police homicide detectives and Suffolk homicide prosecutors in building the case against the three defendants.
“Investigators worked hand in hand for months to see that Curtis’ death did no go unanswered,” he said. “That collaboration will continue until the day each of these men faces justice for their actions.”
Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “I commend the collaboration and dedication of the investigators and prosecutors working on this case. I hope this latest development provides some sense of peace to the family and friends of Curtis Ashford.”
Holloman and Mendez, the principals, are expected to be arraigned tomorrow and Wednesday on murder charges in South Boston District Court. An arraignment for Hemingway has not yet been scheduled.
