K-9 HELPS OFFICERS RECOVER A FIREARM IN DORCHESTERAt about 1:23am, on Saturday, June 14, 2008, officers from Area B-3 (Mattapan/Dorchester) were on routine patrol when they heard shots fired in the area of Darlington Street and Southern Avenue. Upon hearing the shots, officers then observed a black male running away from the scene. When the suspect saw the officers approaching in their cruiser, the suspect quickly stopped and changed direction. Officers quickly exited their cruiser and began pursuing the suspect on foot. During the foot pursuit, officers observed that the suspect was running and reaching at his waist area in such a way as to suggest the suspect was carrying a firearm. The foot pursuit lead officers in and out of several yards. Upon apprehending the suspect, officers discovered that the suspect was no longer in possession of a firearm. As a result, a K-9 unit was called to the scene. Once there, the officer and his K-9 partner retraced the steps of the foot pursuit in hopes of locating the firearm. In short time, the K-9 hit on a scent in the back of 10 Darlington Street. Upon hitting on the scent, the K-9 began scratching at a stack of tires. Upon further inspection, the K-9 officer observed and secured a firearm sitting on top of the stack of the tires. When officers asked the suspect to produce a license to carry a firearm, the suspect stated, “I don’t have a license.”
According to witnesses, the suspect showed up at a party in the area of 22 Darlington Street. However, when the suspect was denied access or entry into the party, witnesses say they heard shots being fired outside the location moments later.
Officers arrested Christopher Fauntleroy, 17, of Boston and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling and Resisting Arrest.
