COURT ARRAIGNMENT LANDS FOUR IN POLICE CUSTODY

At about 11:30am, on Monday, June 2, 2008, officers responded to the West Roxbury District Court House at 445 Arborway for a report of a fight in front of that location. On arrival, officers observed a large group (approximately 20 – 30 people) fighting in front of the courthouse. According to witnesses, a verbal altercation ensued inside the courthouse after the arraignment of Kenneth Mauras, 17, of Roslindale. Mauras was being arraigned in connection to a hit and run incident which took place on Friday, May 30, 2008, in which a 45 year-old female was struck while crossing Hyde Park Avenue. Mauras was charged with Driving to Endanger, Leaving the Scene after Causing Personal Injury, Drag Racing and Operating Without a License.While leaving the courthouse, representatives from Mauras’ family and the victim’s family began exchanging words. Once outside the courthouse, the verbal altercation escalated into a physical one.
During the altercation, officers arrested Miguel Soto, 23, of Jamaica Plain, Kenneth Ortiz, 29, of Boston, Luis Pena, 18, of Jamaica Plain and charged all three with Assault & Battery and Being a Disorderly Person. Officers also arrested Ilya Vodozov, 20, of West Roxbury and charged him with Being a Disorderly Person, Disturbing the Peace and Refusing to Submit to a Lawful Request.
CORRECTION: The victim\’s age, originally reported as 65, is, in fact, 45.
