DETAIL OFFICER LENDS A HAND IN THE BIRTH OF A NEWBORN BABY At about 5:30pm, on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, an officer, performing a paid detail, was flagged down by a motorist at the intersection of Mass and Shawmut Avenues. When the officer approached the car, the operator of the vehicle told the officer that his wife was having a baby. Upon looking inside the motor vehicle, observed a female in the process of giving birth. As a result, the officer promptly notified EMS to respond the scene. Shortly after making the call, the mother delivered the baby. When the child was born, the officer instructed the father to wrap the newborn in a towel. Officer also instructed the father to be careful of the umbilical chord. Mother and newborn were immediately transported to the Brigham and Women’s hospital for further treatment.
SHOTS FIRED LAND FOUR IN CUSTODY
At about 5:33am, on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) observed a black male fire a firearm in the area of 66 Dewitt Drive. Officer then observed the suspect enter a gray motor vehicle. A description of the motor vehicle was quickly broadcast over Channel 3 of the police radio. In short time, officers were able to locate and stop the car. Once stopped, officers instructed all four occupants to exit the car. Once the car was empty, officers looked inside the car and observed the handle of firearm. The firearm (a silver-colored revolver) was seized and entered into evidence. Officers arrested Nathan Kinney, 24, of Roxbury, William Jackson, 21, of Roxbury, Brent Stevenson, 27, of Avon and charged all three with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Assault By Means of a Dangerous Weapon. Officers charged Stephen Freeman, 18, of Jamaica Plain with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Assault By Means of a Dangerous Weapon and Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.

At about 11:33pm, on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown) responded to a radio call for a female yelling that she had just been robbed in the area of Chestnut and Spruce Streets. According to the victim, the suspect (a 5’11” white male, skinny, wearing a dark jacket and light-colored pants) walked up from behind her, pushed her and, then, grabbed her pocketbook. Officers spoke to witnesses who stated that they observed the suspect run into an alley and hide underneath a car. When officers entered the alley, the suspect took off. Officers chased the suspect down Spruce Street, across Beacon Street, into the Boston Common and then into the Public Garden. Once inside the Public Garden, officers chased the suspect towards the Frog Pond. Upon reaching the Frog Pond, the suspect dove headfirst into the water. Officers quickly formed a perimeter and surrounded the suspect. Seeing no viable way to escape capture, the suspect, standing in waist deep water, exited the pond and surrendered to police. Officers arrested Timothy Flaherty, 51, of Lawrence and charged him with Unarmed Robbery and Resisting Arrest.
