Large Check Lands Two in JailYesterday morning around 11:05am, officers from District A-1 (Downtown and Charlestown) responded to a radio call for a larceny in progress at 40 Sumner St. in Boston/Citizen’s Bank.
On arrival, officers spoke to bank personnel who reported that 2 individuals were trying to cash a fake check for $85,950.00. According to bank personnel, the suspects walked into the bank and one walked up to the teller and stated that she had a closed account with the bank that she wanted to reopen, and cash a check. The male suspect urged the female suspect to put her social security number on the check after she signed it.
Officers were shown a copy of the check and told that the numbers on the check were “out of range.” In addition, officers learned that the check was deemed suspicious because the black lettering was smudged. Bank personnel further spoke to the female suspect about how she came to be in possession of the check and she reported that she had let her cousin borrow some money to buy a house, and now that her cousin had sold the house, she was being paid back.
Officers then asked the female suspect how she got the check and she reported that a friend in Africa who wanted to help her get back on her feet sent the check.
Suspects, Christopher Hunt, 24, of Boston and Branda Ciesla, 43, of Mattapan were both arrested and charged with Uttering a False Check.
Domestic Incident Results in Recovery of Firearm (At the Station)
At approximately 4:18pm yesterday, April 2, 2008, officers from District B-3 (Dorchester and Mattapan) responded to a radio call for threats at 72 Babson St. in Mattapan.
On arrival, officers spoke to the victim. The victim reported to officers that her two children’s father threatened her and her family earlier in the day by telling her that he would “start popping people off!” The victim further reported to officers that she has an active restraining order against the suspect and his statement put her in fear for her family’s safety as well as her own. The victim also told officers that the suspect had a history of violence against her.
Having received the above information, officers remained on scene for some time and actively searched the area around their location since the victim believed that the suspect might be in the area. Victim was further advised of her rights and told to contact officers if she heard from the suspect.
About 5:20pm, officers were advised that the suspect had walked into the station to file a complaint against the victim. At the time that the suspect walked into the station, officers were actually speaking to a witness who exclaimed, “…he’ right there!” at the suspect’s entrance to the station, and she was escorted to a room in the back of the station due to her fear of the suspect.
The suspect approached officers and stated that he was aware of the active restraining order against him, but wanted to report that the victim had violated it by contacting him. Officers could clearly detect a strong odor of alcohol on the suspect as they spoke to him, and noted that he had his hands in his pockets the whole time, and appeared to be moving /shifting something in his jacket’s waist or pant area.
After speaking to the suspect, and based on conversations with the victim, and witnesses the determination was made that the suspect should be placed under arrest for Violation of an Active Restraining Order which among other things required the suspect not to contact the victim, stay away from the victim, and turn over all ammunition and firearms to the police. Officers approached the victim and informed of the decision to place him under arrest when he pushed officers away and attempted to flee out of the front door of the station. Officers grabbed the suspect before he could exit out the door and a violent struggle ensued before to place him in handcuffs. As officers struggled with the suspect, they observed him make several attempts to reach to the area of his waistband. During the struggle to subdue the suspect and place him in handcuffs, a black colored firearm fell from his waist that was immediately recovered and rendered safe.
The suspect after a long and violent struggle was placed in handcuffs and escorted to the booking where he continued to try to assault officers. The semi-automatic firearm after being recovered was found to have eight rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.
The suspect, Larry E. Lamar, 23, of Dorchester was arrested and charged with Violation of an Active Restraining Order, Threats 209A, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm with Obliterated Serial Numbers, and Being an Armed Career Criminal.
B&E Suspect Surprised By Officers’ Quick Response
Last night around 10:38pm, officers from District C-6 (South Boston) responded to radio call for breaking and entering in progress at the corner of K St. and Broadway. While en route, officers were advised that the suspect was a white male with a brown coat, and dark colored baseball cap breaking into a red Jeep Wrangler.
On arrival, officers observed an individual matching the suspect’s description entering a nearby liquor store and the described Jeep with its doors and hood open, and property strewn around the motor vehicle. Officers entered the liquor store and observed the individual matching the suspect description yelling expletives at store employees to call the police. Officers approached the suspect and he exclaimed, “How the $@/! did you get here so fast?” Officers spoke with the suspect and noted he was unsteady on his feet, had bloodshot eyes, and was slurring his speech.
The suspect was placed under arrest, and patted own. As a result of the frisk, officers discovered a silver set of pliers, a socket wrench, and a pair of work gloves. Officers then spoke with a witness who stated to officers that the suspect was observed in the Jeep rummaging through its contents then fleeing down the street.
The suspect, James S. Fitzpatrick, 29, of South Boston was arrested and charged with Possession of Burglarious Tools, Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, and Disorderly Conduct.
