Multi-Agency Effort Removes 67 Fugitives From City StreetsCommissioner Davis Orders Immediate Increase of Police Presence
In response to the recent increase of violent activity, the Boston Police Department in partnership with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies executed a massive warrant sweep netting 67 arrests so far. The operation specifically targeted fugitives who were wanted on drug and gang-related charges.
The concerted effort took place over the past 24 hours and remains ongoing. The sweep utilized resources from the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force, the Fugitive and Apprehension Team, the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, the FBI, the Massachusetts State Police, the Parole Department, the US Marshals and Boston Police officers from the local District Stations. The joint effort of participating agencies highlights our commitment towards eradicating firearm activity and gang violence from city streets.
The goal of the operation is to send a clear message to criminals that gun violence will not be tolerated in our community. The roundup is focused on known offenders, many of whom are active gang members. At this stage of the operation, officers have nabbed 67 criminals, seized 4 guns and netted various narcotics including marijuana, cocaine and heroine.
In addition to warrant sweeps, the Boston Police Department is aggressively undertaking the following initiatives to prevent further incidents:
· Community members can anticipate a significant increase of uniform presence.
· Detectives are canvassing neighborhoods for investigative leads.
· Homicide investigators are aggressively pursuing new leads uncovered as a result of the sweep.
· The patrol force is closely monitoring the activity and whereabouts of known gang associates.
· Our intelligence unit along with state and federal partners are developing profiles of targets engaged in violent behavior.
· The Department and specialized units such as Crimestoppers will be proactively engaging community members by distributing anonymous Text-A-Tip pamphlets and keeping residents informed of ongoing efforts.
Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “Our officers are laser focused on their mission to eradicate firearm violence from our community. We will not allow these cowards to derail our mission to reduce violence in the city of Boston.”
