BOSTON, Oct. 26, 2007—Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced the arrest of a suspect in the July 12, 2006, murder of Herman Taylor III, a Roxbury youth known for his scholastic and athletic ability.An ongoing investigation by Suffolk prosecutors in the Special Grand Jury and Boston Police homicide detectives on the street has yielded evidence prompting investigators to obtain an arrest warrant for LAMORY GRAY, 22 (D.O.B. 10/15/85). Boston Police executed that warrant late this morning and took Gray into custody without incident.
“Today my thoughts are with the family of Herman Taylor III. I would also like to commend the ceaseless efforts of the Boston Police homicide unit and the members of the District Attorney’s office for their relentless dedication and commitment in securing justice for Mr. Taylor.” said Davis.
“This arrest reflects an exhaustive investigation by men and women who would not rest until this promising young man’s killer was identified and apprehended,” Conley said. “Even now, they continue to work hand in hand to find justice for Herman Taylor III and his family.”
Evidence suggests that Taylor, a Belmont High student who attended that school through the METCO program and had just started work at a new job, was leaving a friend’s house shortly before 6:15 p.m. and was returning to his Crawford Street home when Gray approached him. Investigators do not believe that the two knew one another.
Evidence further suggests that, after a brief exchange, Gray produced a handgun and fired multiple shots and striking Taylor. Taylor made his way to nearby Humboldt Street, where he collapsed. He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead of his injuries.
Gray is expected to be arraigned on murder charges Monday in the Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court Department.
